Jessie“I have been attending Jo's Pilates classes for 19 years now. Since the beginning of lockdown I have done the Zoom classes.
While I miss seeing other class members in person, by doing classes online I have more instruction from Jo than in a face-to-face class and I save travelling time and worrying about traffic. I now do 2 classes a week instead of just one." |
David"I joined Jo’s Pilates classes in 2019 after having one to one sessions with her as I had suffered two very painful bouts of sciatica- Jo helped me with exercises to alleviate the pain and also with exercises and stretches to help avoid the sciatica returning.
I then joined her regular Pilates classes online and I have always found her a very supportive conscientious and friendly teacher. She is always willing to give advice and support when needed - no request for help is ever ignored. I would urge anyone who wants to improve their posture and fitness to join" |
Sue “I contacted Jo in 2014 for help having been recommended to do so by my Personal Trainer - she knew Jo to be an excellent Pilates teacher. I was suffering with constant ongoing rotator cuff pain and stiffness and associated neck pain on my right side, following an injury to my rotator cuff muscle.
It proved to be one of the best decision I have taken. From the outset Jo proved herself to be so professional and knowledgeable, very friendly and supportive and gradually my shoulder and neck problems receded. I have been a keen client of Jo’s since then and feel that my flexibility and muscle strength have improved so much since that time. Such is her attention to detail that she gave me advice on how to arrange my computer work station in my job and how to use a vertical mouse! The stopping of face to face classes in Covid lockdown did not deter Jo - she moved her classes online and taught us all how to navigate our way round Zoom. Being online, she took the opportunity to expand the range of exercise and meditation classes she offers - she used the Covid crisis as an opportunity to provide an even better service to her clients and I can only admire all the time and effort she must have put into this. Her support, enthusiasm, professionalism and all round kindness never fails to amaze me, and I would heartily recommend anyone with joint or muscle problems, or even if you just want to be more flexible, to try Jo’s classes - you won’t regret it!" |
Pat “Jo's classes have made me aware of my posture failings and have taught me what to do to correct them. My core stability is much better although my balance needs work!
Jo is a very patient teacher and takes care to give everyone advice tailored to their particular needs. She's very good at adapting things to take account of temporary disabilities. I have recommended her to several friends. Keep up the good work Jo!!” |
Jan"I recently moved out of the Dartford area and was really missing my weekly Pilates class with SuperJo.
A friend recommended I try out Jo’s Zoom classes as she had found them very convenient and enjoyable. I am so glad I did! It is very easy to book the classes and set yourself up and if there is a difficulty Jo is always happy to help out. With Jo’s Zoom classes I have benefited not only from her expert Pilates instruction and relaxed and friendly approach but also enjoy still being part of her Pilates community and the friendships and support this brings. I feel like Jo is in the same room as me, she misses nothing! I have gone from doing 1 face to face class a week to now taking advantage of a Zoom class pass where I can do many classes in a week as it is so convenient practising from home. No driving, traffic or parking … also a big bonus!" |
Anita“I can honestly say that the zoom classes with Jo have been invaluable. To be able to have a class in your own home and still see all your friends has been a godsend. I am sure that without my Pilates classes I would never have recovered from my back operation as well as I have.
Jo makes you feel very comfortable and will always go the extra mile to make sure you can do the exercises, and if you are struggling, she will always have another alternative. Jo's first commitment is always to make sure we are all happy.” |
Kira“I've been doing classes with Jo since I was about 12, so over 12 years now! I started joining classes with my mum before starting them properly. Jo always does her research if you have any medical diagnoses that she hasn't worked with before and Jo's hard work with me has been the biggest game changer for my bad knee, meaning I discounted surgery as a result.
She's also massively helped my back from being at desks all day. She was a lifesaver during the pandemic, keeping me moving on Zoom and I look forward to classes all the time. I even did exercises she taught me through uni when I couldn't join her classes as missed being part of them. Jo is an absolute joy and brightens up any day in her classes whether in person or zoom. She has also built a community, with so many people building friendships through her classes. I cannot recommend her enough!" |
Alex"I have been doing Pilates for 2 years now. Pilates was recommended by my Golf coach who noticed a remarkable difference in my flexibility and posture within a few months of doing Pilates with an outstanding Pilates Instructor Jo Southgate.
Taking up Pilates is one of the best things I have done in recent years. If you are lucky to be trained by Jo as your Pilates instructor, count yourself extremely lucky. Jo is not only an amazing Pilates Instructor, she is also a wonderful person and a very good friend who knows her clients very well indeed. Before starting a class, Jo is able to pick up any problems her clients have simply by their posture. All my Pilates friends will agree that this is an amazing skill. Jo knows the relevant exercises for neck problems, back issues and hip problems. I am really impressed by this. Sometimes Jo finishes our lesson with relaxation session which is really calming. You certainly go home a different person. Now and again Jo tests her clients knowledge on the principles of Pilates which I thoroughly enjoy and I am glad to say that Lateral Breathing is a new skill I have learnt from this really gifted Pilates instructor. For this I am very grateful to Jo. I would gladly recommend Jo’s Pilates classes to anyone." |

“I used to do face to face Pilates with Jo years ago but stopped once I moved. During lockdown it was an ideal opportunity to restart due to Jo arranging online zoom classes.
I find these more convenient to fit in around my routine as no travelling is needed. I also feel that Jo can help you much more on zoom and the small classes mean it’s easier for Jo to correct you. Jo is so friendly and approachable, nothing is too much trouble. I’m now more aware of my posture and motivated to keep on improving." |

Cheryl"I’ve been enjoying Jo’s Pilates classes for almost 10 years. The classes have definitely improved my tone, suppleness and overall fitness. Plus Jo has helped me recover more quickly from back pain and a whiplash injury.
Her depth of knowledge is so impressive and you can really tell how much she loves teaching. She explains things clearly and makes time for everyone in class. The classes are friendly and welcoming and we often get together outside of class too. So thanks Jo - you’re keeping us fit and we’re having lots of fun at the same time - a great combination!" |

"I joined Jo’s Pilates and aerobics classes since September 2021. I was very nervous at first as I had never taken part in Pilates or aerobics.
Jo welcomed me, together with all the other ladies/men in the group. I felt part of the class immediately and have not looked back. Jo is an excellent, talented and dedicated teacher. She puts a lot of enthusiasm into making her classes fun and enjoyable. If there is anything you are struggling with, she will make time to help you. I now feel more confident and energetic in myself and do not suffer with pain in my joints and knees like I did before. I really appreciate everything you do, Jo, and am truly grateful for all your help and support." |
Emma"Over the years, I have been to Pilates classes at various gyms/venues and had several Pilates teachers. Although they have all been good, I would recommend Jo above all.
She is passionate about Pilates, your posture, how to look after your spine and can spot if you have an issue simply as you walk into the class. From that moment, the lesson will then include exercises to help your particular issue. I would recommend that everybody do Pilates, but for an outstanding teacher, choose Jo." |

"I have dabbled with a little exercise before but never stuck to anything and just took it for granted that my body would carry on supporting me with no help from myself. Inevitably time took its toll and I found myself stiff and achy and I felt much older than I was. I also felt little motivation to do anything about it as I thought it was just an inevitable part of getting older. I was also finding it much more difficult to manage stress and it was causing a lot of physical reactions like constant headaches, stiff neck and shoulders and an increased sense of anxiety.
Then I found Jo and things are feeling very different.
I felt better after the very first class and things have continued to improve. Jo has taught me the importance of being aware of your body and your posture and to take responsibility for changing it. Just a slight shift in how I was holding myself made a significant difference to the feeling of tension I had constantly felt in my neck. By teaching me correct breathing and spinal and pelvic alignment, I have become much more in tune with my body and now I find myself automatically wanting to correct my posture when I am sitting at the computer or standing in a queue and I feel more comfortable for doing so. Yes, I do ache slightly after some of the classes but it is a warm feeling that says I have had a good stretch and have corrected something rather than I have pushed my body too hard and now it is taking its toll.
Jo has been constantly supportive, inspiring and motivating. She knows the name of every person in her class and makes each of us feel special and cared for. This makes such a difference to how I approach this class as I feel it really is right just for me. There is always the opportunity to ask about any specific areas that you want to work on and if anyone has any injuries then Jo will work individually with them to make sure the exercise is adapted for them appropriately. Her knowledge of the anatomy of the body is extensive and she teaches us so much more than just how to position our bodies! The love and care she shows to everyone is clearly reciprocated and everyone really loves her.
One of my favourite parts of the lesson is the guided relaxation at the end where you imagine yourself in a calm and peaceful place. Allowing myself the time to stop and inhale/exhale deeply gives my body and mind a brief moment of well-being which I can take with me to help me through the day.
After just 10 weeks with Jo I feel much more flexible and less achy when I wake up in the mornings. I feel stronger and more centred and altogether much happier now I am working with my body rather than trying to fight it getting older. I would recommend Jo’s Pilates class to everyone who wants to feel good."

Mick"I've been attending Jo's classes for approximately seven years and when I first attended I was just getting over having compressed disc's in my neck and in time brought on arthritis. With the help of attending Jo's classes it has helped my posture and flexibility. Not only is Jo a superb instructor. She always finds time for everyone to make sure that you get the full benefit from her classes. On a personal front, she is a very nice person that cares and I am proud to call her a close friend"

"My name is Kirsty. I have only been attending Jo’s classes for a short time, with the aim of improving a recurring lower back problem. It has definitely helped and Jo’s enthusiasm and knowledge has been great. The classes are fun, informative and Jo is able to customise the exercises to help the individual, even from the first session I came away feeling the benefit. Great classes, led by a great teacher."
