My name is Dee De Souza. I'm pictured here with Jo.
I joined Jo’s pilates and aerobics classes since September 2021. I was very nervous at first as I had never taken part in pilates or aerobics. Jo welcomed me, together with all the other ladies/men in the group. I felt part of the class immediately and have not looked back. Jo is an excellent, talented and dedicated teacher. She puts a lot of enthusiasm into making her classes fun and enjoyable. If there is anything you are struggling with, she will make time to help you. I now feel more confident and energetic in myself and do not suffer with pain in my joints and knees like I did before. I really appreciate everything you do, Jo, and am truly grateful for all your help and support.

My name is Cheryl Fisher. I’ve been enjoying Jo’s Pilates classes for almost 10 years. The classes have definitely improved my tone, suppleness and overall fitness. Plus Jo has helped me recover more quickly from back pain and a whiplash injury. Her depth of knowledge is so impressive and you can really tell how much she loves teaching. She explains things clearly and makes time for everyone in class. The classes are friendly and welcoming and we often get together outside of class too. So thanks Jo - you’re keeping us fit and we’re having lots of fun at the same time - a great combination! |

My name is Emma Duda
Over the years, I have been to Pilates classes at various gyms/venues and had several Pilates teachers.
Although they have all been good, I would recommend Jo above all.
She is passionate about Pilates, your posture, how to look after your spine and can spot if you have an issue simply as you walk into the class.
From that moment, the lesson will then include exercises to help your particular issue.
I would recommend that everybody do Pilates, but for an outstanding teacher, choose Jo.

My name is Alex Machado I have been doing Pilates for 2 years now. Pilates was recommended by my Golf coach who noticed a remarkable difference in my flexibility and posture within a few months of doing Pilates with an outstanding Pilates Instructor Jo Southgate. Taking up Pilates is one of the best things I have done in recent years. If you are lucky to be trained by Jo as your Pilates instructor, count yourself extremely lucky. Jo is not only an amazing Pilates Instructor, she is also a wonderful person and a very good friend who knows her clients very well indeed. Before starting a class, Jo is able to pick up any problems her clients have simply by their posture. All my Pilates friends will agree that this is an amazing skill. Jo knows the relevant exercises for neck problems, back issues and hip problems. I am really impressed by this. Sometimes Jo finishes our lesson with relaxation session which is really calming. You certainly go home a different person. Now and again Jo tests her clients knowledge on the principles of Pilates which I thoroughly enjoy and I am glad to say that Lateral Breathing is a new skill I have learnt from this really gifted Pilates instructor. For this I am very grateful to Jo. I would gladly recommend Jo’s Pilates classes to anyone. |

My name is Pat Sibley I started doing Pilates after I retired and have known Jo for several years. We lost touch for a while as we both changed venues but I got in touch again after I had a frozen shoulder and wanted to get the movement back. We started with some 1-to-1 sessions where she assessed my new problems and reminded herself of the old one with my lower back. She set me up with a series of exercises which made a difference within a few weeks. Following a reassessment I got another set of exercises to complement those. Jo has a very good way of explaining what happens with the muscles and how that affects your skeleton. My posture has definitely improved as people I haven’t seen for a while ask me if I’ve lost weight. The answer is ‘no, it’s just better supported and held in’. I also practise some of the less visible exercises while standing in queues or in exhibitions and that reduces my backache. I definitely recommend Jo to anyone who is unsure whether Pilates is for them. She’ll tell you the truth and not try to blind you with science. She’s a lovely, caring person who treats all her clients as friends. During lockdown she has spent considerable amounts of time and money providing us with online classes and YouTube videos so we can practise at home. Thank-you Jo!! |

My name is Kirsty. I have only been attending Jo’s classes for a short time, with the aim of improving a recurring lower back problem. It has definitely helped and Jo’s enthusiasm and knowledge has been great. The classes are fun, informative and Jo is able to customise the exercises to help the individual, even from the first session I came away feeling the benefit. Great classes, led by a great teacher.

My name is Iona Stephens and I am 46.
I began Pilates with Jo about 10 weeks ago and have really noticed a difference in my sense of well-being.
I have dabbled with a little exercise before but never stuck to anything and just took it for granted that my body would carry on supporting me with no help from myself. Inevitably time took its toll and I found myself stiff and achy and I felt much older than I was. I also felt little motivation to do anything about it as I thought it was just an inevitable part of getting older. I was also finding it much more difficult to manage stress and it was causing a lot of physical reactions like constant headaches, stiff neck and shoulders and an increased sense of anxiety.
Then I found Jo and things are feeling very different.
I felt better after the very first class and things have continued to improve. Jo has taught me the importance of being aware of your body and your posture and to take responsibility for changing it. Just a slight shift in how I was holding myself made a significant difference to the feeling of tension I had constantly felt in my neck. By teaching me correct breathing and spinal and pelvic alignment, I have become much more in tune with my body and now I find myself automatically wanting to correct my posture when I am sitting at the computer or standing in a queue and I feel more comfortable for doing so. Yes, I do ache slightly after some of the classes but it is a warm feeling that says I have had a good stretch and have corrected something rather than I have pushed my body too hard and now it is taking its toll.
Jo has been constantly supportive, inspiring and motivating. She knows the name of every person in her class and makes each of us feel special and cared for. This makes such a difference to how I approach this class as I feel it really is right just for me. There is always the opportunity to ask about any specific areas that you want to work on and if anyone has any injuries then Jo will work individually with them to make sure the exercise is adapted for them appropriately. Her knowledge of the anatomy of the body is extensive and she teaches us so much more than just how to position our bodies! The love and care she shows to everyone is clearly reciprocated and everyone really loves her.
One of my favourite parts of the lesson is the guided relaxation at the end where you imagine yourself in a calm and peaceful place. Allowing myself the time to stop and inhale/exhale deeply gives my body and mind a brief moment of well-being which I can take with me to help me through the day.
After just 10 weeks with Jo I feel much more flexible and less achy when I wake up in the mornings. I feel stronger and more centred and altogether much happier now I am working with my body rather than trying to fight it getting older. I would recommend Jo’s Pilates class to everyone who wants to feel good.

My name is Jessie Summers. I have been going to Jo's Pilates classes for over 8 years now, starting after having facet joint injections and physiotherapy for lower back problems.
Jo is friendly, a patient teacher and if an exercise causes pain or a student finds it difficult she will always suggest an alternative. She is quick to praise and even in a large class finds time to give everyone some personal attention.
Owing to my Pilates classes I have had no serious recurrence of back problems, I am much more aware of my posture and do 15 minutes or so of simple exercises every day.
